Apr 22: Markos Vamvakaris: An Evening of Rebetiko with the Zefyros Dance Group & Local Musicians

Join us Apr 22, 2024, at 7:30pm sharp (arrive as early as 7:15), for an evening of music and dance!

Discover the musical legacy of Markos Vamvakaris, the composer, poet, and musician known as the ‘patriarch of rebetiko’, whose artistic output had a lasting influence on the genre.

Rebetiko originated in the late 19th century, and has sometimes been referred to as "the Greek blues". Songs written by Vamvakaris form a significant part of the traditional rebetiko repertoire.

In this presentation, the Zefyros dance group from the Hellenic Community of Vancouver, together with local musicians, will present a taverna scene from the 1940s, featuring songs by Vamvakaris, and a variety of dances.

Arrive 7:15pm for a 7:30pm sharp start at 4500 Arbutus Street in the Upper Hall. Refreshments should be available as well. We hope to see you there!
