Nov 11: Evan Freeman on Sacred Memory: the Entrance of the Theotokos

The Entrance of the Theotokos

Join us Nov 25, 2024, at 7:30pm, at 4500 Arbutus Street - Upper Hall.

Every November 21, the Greek Orthodox Church celebrates the feast of the Entrance of the Virgin into the Temple. This talk will explore how Byzantine art visualized the Virgin as a symbol of the Church in ritual settings. Dr. Freeman will explore a range of Byzantine churches, and investigate how liturgical objects evoke rich theological connections between the Virgin Mary, the Temple, and the Church. The talk will show how Byzantines used art and ritual to cultivate a memory of sacred history and to understand themselves.
